Residue – Jasper Rigole
Residue is a series of collages by Jasper Rigole that were created in 2019 after he moved into a new studio. Initially, this place was intended as a storage for remnants of his past projects, older works and his collection of found documents. Over time, Rigole also went there to browse, sort, and rework the stored items. This mainly happened at intermediate moments; after a day's work in his film archive, after teaching or during the weekend or in the evening. These apparently lost moments – which can also be defined as residue – were thus regained. As this time lies outside of regular working time, he was often accompanied by his daughters who soon turned the place into a place for crafting. Especially the old copying machine turned out to be a great asset. The RESIDUE series come about when remnants of his collecting practice mix with the remainders of the children's play process. Brought together in typical Esselte-folders, they form collages. The references to the artists daily life give the collages the character of a diary. In retrospect, however, it is unclear to trace which parts are personal, which belong to the children and which come from anonymous others. The series therefore form a falsified memory, a souvenir of a fabulated life.
